Cheap overseas dental holidays: are they worth it?

Many people who need a lot of dental work often consider going overseas to have it done. Cheap overseas dental holidays have become very popular as people can have their dental treatment done at a fraction of the cost and have a holiday at the same time.

We’ve seen some patients who have had a good experience with dental tourism overseas, but also some shockers. There was the patient who had a ‘dental implant’ placed. It looked like a nail from Bunnings was drilled into their bone. And it was misplaced, right into the patients’ sinus. Then there was the poor lady who had crowns placed on all of her top teeth. And then ended up getting an infection. She booked a flight back to Bali for the next day to go back to the dentist who did the work.

If you’re considering a cheap overseas dental holiday, ask yourself these questions:

1. Have you researched the dental practice you are planning to attend? Check out reviews, websites, talk to others who have attended.
2. Have you researched the dentist you will be seeing? Make sure they have proper and credible credentials and have done the appropriate training from a reputable institution for the treatment they are doing.
3. If, after going to the practice, can you still opt out? If you don’t feel comfortable or change your mind about the treatment, can you still back out? Or have you already paid, or are you locked in?
4. Are you prepared to return to the practice if there is a problem, or if something isn’t to your satisfaction? Dental treatment can have its inherent problems. You may need to have something changed or fixed if it isn’t to your satisfaction. Or what if something goes wrong once you get home? Don’t assume that once the treatment is completed it will be perfect forever.
