How to stop snoring
Snoring can be a frustrating problem as it’s often not something that can be controlled without the right intervention. It can cause disruptive sleep to the snorer and anyone else in close range!
So what is snoring?
Snoring is the noise produced when sleeping due to the partial blockage of air flow. The noise is created by the vibration of the soft tissues in the area.
Is snoring bad?
Snoring is disruptive to nearby sleeping partners, but more importantly, in some individuals, it can actually be indicative of an underlying sleep disorder called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The difference between snoring and OSA is that those with sleep apnea actually pause or stop breathing for a short time at regular intervals during sleep. OSA is a serious medical condition that requires medical intervention. Symptoms of OSA include tiredness, mood changes, disrupted sleep, gasping or choking during sleep. It can also lead to increased risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, depression and motor vehicle accidents. If you suspect you could have OSA, it is strongly recommended you speak to your GP and undergo a sleep study to see if you do in fact have OSA.
If you don’t have OSA, how can you stop snoring?
- If you are overweight, lifestyle changes to help you lose weight can reduce snoring
- Treatment of any anatomical nasal issues (if relevant)
- Reduction of post nasal drip (if relevant)
- Limiting alcohol consumption
- Speak to your dentist about oral appliances to help reduce snoring. Studies have shown that use of a mandibular advancement splint (an appliance you wear at night that helps to posture your lower jaw forwards), can help to open the airway and prevent the blockage and vibration of tissues that causes snoring. Speak to your dentist, or get a referral to a dental sleep specialist to find out more information. At our Claremont dental clinic, we are able to offer the Somnodent device to those who do not have OSA, but struggle with snoring. We have found our patients have been very happy with the results.
