Protecting Patients: National Advertising Laws

The dental industry, like many others, is governed by many laws. In particular, the national laws for advertising are very specific when it comes to the right way a dental practice can advertise itself.

At Dental Quarters, we take these laws very seriously, and are very particular in ensuring we adhere to them. These laws exist to protect patients from being given false information, unreasonable expectations or treatment that isn’t necessary.

Here’s a quick summation of the laws:

  1. Written testimonials are not allowed in any advertising. This includes on social media (e.g. Facebook pages), or on websites.
  2. Giving misleading, false or deceptive information is not allowed.
  3. Any gift, offer or other inducement must have full disclosed terms and conditions.
  4. Advertising must not create an unreasonable expectation of beneficial treatment.
  5. Advertising must not encourage unnecessary or indiscriminate use of health services.

You can find the full document from AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) here.

We’re pleased to say that all of our advertising and online is compliant with these laws. If you are aware of anyone who isn’t complying with the laws, you can notify AHPRA. They are the regulating body who look after the interests of healthcare consumers. They also deal with any complaints or negligence claims against healthcare providers.
