What to do when your teeth are sensitive

Sensitive teeth can be painful during eating and drinking. It can also make routine dental visits uncomfortable, especially having your teeth cleaned.

At our Claremont dental clinic, we know that dental appointments aren’t always the most fun. Our goal as a team is to try and make your experience as comfortable as we can.

Here are our top 5 tips on how to reduce sensitivity at the dentist:

  1. Use a sensitive toothpaste for 2 weeks before your dental visit (if you don’t already use one). You can also use GC Tooth Mousse (available online or from Woolworths and most pharmacies) or GC Tooth Mousse Plus (available from most dental clinics).
  2. If you’re really concerned, you could even take some Paracetomol or Ibuprofen prior to your visit.
  3. Find a dental practice which has the revolutionary EMS Airflow. This fantastic cleaning machine creates a dental spa experience for every patient. The machine also heats the water used during cleaning to a toasty 37 degrees, so that your teeth will be much less sensitive. More about the EMS Airflow here.
  4. Ask for hand scaling only when you have your teeth cleaned if you really can’t tolerate any water in your mouth
  5. Ask your dentist if there are any other reasons for your tooth sensitivity. Sometimes some problems such as toothbrush abrasion areas or exposed roots can be treated, which helps reduce sensitivity for patients immensely.
